Best Age for Braces

Garvey Team Orthodontics– BRACES used to be a part of being a teenager, but now some kids start and finish orthodontic treatment long before adolescence.  But despite the allure of getting it over with young, starting early is not right for every child.  Some children who start early will have to have a 2nd phase of treatment with braces.

Assessment at age 7  – The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children have a check up with an orthodontic specialist (ORTHODONTIST) no later than age 7.  No referral is needed from your general dentist.

Problems to watch for in 7-10 year olds:  crossbite, crowding, open bite, protrusion, Class III, large disastema, oral habits, ectopic eruption.  Malocclusions like these benefit from early diagnosis by an specialist, an Orthodontist.

Dr. Michael Garvey is a board certified ORTHODONTIST serving the St. Charles, St. Peters, O’Fallon, Bridgeton, and Maryland Heights area.  Dr. Garvey does metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign, retainers, teeth whitening (summer special $150 for custom made whitening trays), expansion appliances, removable appliances, bionators, RPE, mouth guards, clear aligners, splints, and bonded lingual retainers for children and adults.  Some family dentists offer orthodontic treatment, your family dentist is not an orthodontist.  Parents should be aware that “an ORTHODONTIST receives an additional 2-3 years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to allign and straighten teeth”.
