Combined Orthodontic Care with Jaw Surgery
As an Orthodontic Specialist, Dr. Garvey has a responsibility to offer all that modern dentistry has to offer and present various treatment options to his patients. One of those options is a combination of comprehensive braces combined with jaw surgery to obtain the best and most stable correction of a severe functional imbalance. Dr. Garvey will discuss the combined care at a free consult. Usually the braces are first and the jaw surgeries are done towards the end of the orthodontic care. The teeth are moved into a position where the best fit is obtained immediately after the jaw surgery. About 4-8 months of orthodontics are needed after the surgery to finalize the bite and result. The entire treatment plan may be only 2 years, which is usually much less time than if attempted to treat by orthodontics alone. Usually the adult with severe jaw imbalance is more difficult to treat to a functional end result without jaw surgery because there is no growth to help Dr. Garvey reduce the jaw imbalance. This is why Dr. Garvey prefers to see the severe cases at age 7, especially if they have an under-bite or severe over-bite so the interceptive care in the mixed dentition can reduce the need for future surgical intervention.
Below you will see the digital photographs of a patient treated in this manner. Although the treatment is done to correct a severe functional imbalance, notice the positive esthetic profile changes which can only be accomplished with combined care. The changes can be described as a “natural face lift” because the soft tissue drapes more naturally across the improved bone balance.
